Among the Min Chia of Yunnan in China during the 30s, guests had to receive a written list of all the other people invited; they were then given several days in which to weigh up whether they wished to go or not. Guests would once have been affronted to find themselves among people of a status lower than their own; a host could ruin his reputation by subjecting guests to such insensitivity.
